A Columbo Episode (kind of) in a Book

As soon as you start reading, you know exactly what’s about to happen. You know who the killer is from the first chapter. She’s admitted it, after all; now there’s a massive clue. Or do you know what’s happened?

Meet Charles and Matthew. Two men who have grown up with the spoils in life and have clearly wanted for nothing. Parents who socialized with the wealthy and elite of the country, I think it’s fair to say the family have friends in high places. The two men have a wonderful life together; a beautiful marriage, a beautiful townhouse in central London and a beautiful son Titus- a high achiever who never gets into trouble. Titus is technically Matthew’s nephew, but after his sister tragically died adopted him as his own. While not as close to his adopted son, Charles treats Titus like his own and comes to his aid when Matthew seems to go MIA. Things get strange when the family meet Rachel, first in a bookstore, then in the supermarket. Unaware of her intentions and growing fears of his husband, Matthew invites her to the couple’s book club. While very uncomfortable initially, Rachel finds her feet amongst a class of people she isn’t used to being around. Even gaining a job with Charles’s Godmother with a high wage and board. What does Rachel really want? As the walls come crumbling down on the so-called perfect life of Matthew, Charles and Titus, B.P. Walter gives the impression that no matter what passion in life you’re in, you switch from angel to devil quicker than you might know.

You can tell that this thriller has a lot happening through the pages. Walter deals with social class prejudice and the struggles on both sides that come with that. The need to want revenge on those who have done you wrong continues throughout this novel from beginning to end. The plot twists I did eventually see coming still shocked me to keep awake reading late at night.

The only reason I haven’t given this fantastic book five stars is given the Columbo style in the way it started; that is a personal preference, and I know it won’t be for everybody. There are some trigger warnings here; there is cheating happening in this book, so know that going in, but I really encourage people to pick this book up, especially if you’re a thriller fan.
