Lost in the Neverwoods by Aiden Thomas
When finishing “Lost in the Neverwoods,” you expect to be satisfied when it promises to be a retelling. Honestly, I was left wondering: Is it really a retelling of Peter Pan?

Don’t bother if you’re looking for Captain Hook.
According to a Reddit thread, book suggestions for Thomas, they have created a plot “after the events in Neverland, with Wendy as a teenager[…]explores the lingering impact of Neverland on Wendy’s life” (Reddit, 2021). The original thread has since been deleted. What it does prove is that many readers want a retelling of Peter Pan, as evidenced by the headlining title ‘Retellings and Spin-offs of Peter Pan’. Even suggestions of books that I’ve not heard of before. Guess that’s the point. Anyway, the point I’m making is that Captain Hook isn’t a key character in Lost in the Neverwoods. There is an appearance of a man described as having thick, long, jet-black hair that crosses paths with Wendy at her summer job at the local hospital. Is that Captain Hook?
Peter & Wendy
Suppose you could say that the love interest between Peter and Wendy is pretty much the same. The biggest difference is that this is after the first visit to Neverland and, due to a traumatic experience that occurred not long after, Wendy in Thomas’s retelling has no memory of the visit or even meeting the Lost Boys and Peter. The three siblings are still known as the darling children, but Michael and John have been missing for years. Although Wendy was there when they vanished, the guilt and trauma force Wendy to block events out. When the reader discovers what really happened to the brothers, the conclusion, for a YA novel, is much darker than expected. No wonder Wendy blocks the events out, but once Peter turns up again, the memories gradually start to return to her.

Let me ask, what do you expect from the role of Peter Pan?
Thomas shows Peter to be a sensitive soul, who feels that it’s his job to make everyone feel better. An emotional medicine. Ironic, as the small-town police force hunts for a kidnapper matching Peter Pan’s description. There is an arrest of a killer, not a kidnapper, with Wendy’s memories of the day of her brother’s disappearance. It is one of a few retellings that are “more complex than innocent world J.M. Barrie” (Amazon 2010) had in mind originally.
