Volume 3, Five-Star Read
Semi-Nonfiction Novella, 4.5-Star Read.
Ghosts are coming together to support each other. A club started by a local group of ghosts that mix with humans. Stranger things have been known to happen.
Such a positive demonstration of the reality of mental health.
Through the reading community, I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback.
Top Tip: Read the series in order. I happened to read volume 3 before volume 1. If you follow my lead (I don’t recommend it), you’ll miss little details by not reading the graphic novels in order.
Author and illustrator Lize Medding has captured the importance of the invisible struggles regarding mental health through a group of friendly ghosts navigating the world. The ghosts are able to come together, create a community of common ground, form connections, and experience validation and solidarity with one another.
With mental health being a continuous topic of conversation and subject of debate, Medding is speaking out across several age groups; from young children, adolescents and adults. According to the World Health Organisation, “Adolescence is a crucial period for developing social and emotional habits important for mental well-being” (World Health Organisation, 2024).
Overall, having read one volume and the semi-nonfiction novella (if I can call it that), The Ghost Club Series gives an overall message that you are never truly alone, exactly the message that the Richard Charles Rodgers composer and Hammerstein lyrics of You’ll Never Walk Alone originally from the musical Carousel (then covered by Gerry and the Pacemakers for the Liverpool, football community): “Walk on. Walk on. With hope in your heart And you’ll never walk alone. You’ll never walk alone” (Roders and Hammerstein e.d. Gerry and The Pacemakers, 2025).
